Morgan's Thoughts

Racism and nativism are related because they both discriminate against certain races. The immigration policy can affect families because there could be problems with everyone in a family being able to migrate here. This could cause family separations which have a grand impact on families. When this happens usually the families that get to cross make money and send supplies to the ones left behind. I think that it is important to keep on learning about societal issues in our country. A few main takeaways from this class were to be kind, open-minded, and respectful of others. I really enjoyed it when the guest speakers came in to speak. I thought it was very interesting and fun to learn from someone so knowledgeable. I chose my topic based off of the Purdue Library database. I think that bullying, discrimination, and teasing are common in today's society towards everyone. My target audience is more generalized for anyone who wants to learn about effective communication and the impacts of discrimination. I decided on my target audience based on the design of my PowerPoint. My PowerPoint is very cartoony and can be school-aged appropriate. It is not a difficult PowerPoint to understand. I shared my materials on Twitter. When I try to upload my PDF and screenshot to this blog, it will not let me. You can find my materials on Brightspace. The hardest part of summarizing the research article is not knowing how much data to include and what was necessary to put in this project. I thought the fact sheet made it easy to make the PowerPoint. All of my data, points, topics, etc. came from my fact sheet.   As a future health care professional, I think that education is important. No one knows everything and learning is a constant throughout life. I believe that educating educators on how to deal with certain situations would be beneficial. Also giving them a perspective on what the kid may be feeling is important. My dad is a special education teacher so I grew up learning the realm of that type of teaching, but a majority of his job is calming and helping his students. He finds that a lot of teachers just send the kids straight to his room at the beginning of class or if they start to become disruptive etc. they don't deal with it. They either call him into the room or send the kid to his room. My dad is only one person and can not monitor or calm a whole grade of children at once. The macro-level factors related to cumulative trauma are historical trauma, pervasive institutional discrimination, and a hostile national context. The microlevel traumatic experiences are interpersonal discrimination and microaggressions. This level also included struggles with identity and recognition. Some of the outcomes for MENA Americans are hopelessness, insecurity, and alienation. Not all MENA people are Muslims, and not all Muslims are MENA. Adjusting to the American society can be hard as well which can lead to culture shock, issues with language barriers, and social exclusions. People come to America in hopes to achieve the American Dream or even just a better life. They end up experiencing some traumatic events which lead them to anxiety, depression, and psychological distress. Trauma is not linear so the events can have various effects on each individual. I think racism affects mental health because it tears you down mentally. You start thinking bad about yourself and rely on others' opinions of you. Racism to me is a form of bullying which is not okay. This can give you anxiety which can turn into affecting your physical health. Mental health is just as important as physical health. It is a proven fact that if your mental health is not okay it will start to deteriorate your physical health. If you are so nervous about being bullied you may not eat, sleep, etc. which has a great impact on physical health. My article for our final project is actually about how ethnic and racial discrimination affects adolescents. My study proved that it causes anxiety, lower academic performance, and more. A multiracial person is someone with 2+ racial group memberships (Lecture 23, Slide 3). In 2000 the Census changed so that people can choose more than one racial box. This allows people to mark how they want to be represented. I think it is great that there are more options to choose from, but that does not mean all multiracial people identify all of their races on the forms, surveys, etc. My major is in the healthcare field and as a healthcare professional, I think it is important to have multiple options. Different races show different medical signs and are more prone to certain diseases just based on their race. This means marking down all of your races is important, especially in a medical setting. It also helps balance the racial categories to show more representation for the minority population.
