Week 13 blog due 4/10
I think racism affects mental health because it tears you down mentally. You start thinking bad about yourself and rely on others' opinions of you. Racism to me is a form of bullying which is not okay. This can give you anxiety which can turn into affecting your physical health. Mental health is just as important as physical health. It is a proven fact that if your mental health is not okay it will start to deteriorate your physical health. If you are so nervous about being bullied you may not eat, sleep, etc. which has a great impact on physical health. My article for our final project is actually about how ethnic and racial discrimination affects adolescents. My study proved that it causes anxiety, lower academic performance, and more. I was also surprised to find out that most of the discrimination was in form of ethnic/racial teasing which came from their friends. As a child you need validation and to fit in so not getting that from your friends can be detrimental. People seek acceptance, especially children. My study did not really have a history of racial groups always facing racism. It acknowledged that this has always been a problem, but didn't go into any details. I think that since mine was a research article a historical background would not be appropriate for the type of paper I chose to read. I think that history is important, but that would be for just a random article, not a peer-reviewed, factual, study-based article.
