Blog 15 due 4/24

 As a future health care professional, I think that education is important. No one knows everything and learning is a constant throughout life. I believe that educating educators on how to deal with certain situations would be beneficial. Also giving them a perspective on what the kid may be feeling is important. My dad is a special education teacher so I grew up learning the realm of that type of teaching, but a majority of his job is calming and helping his students. He finds that a lot of teachers just send the kids straight to his room at the beginning of class or if they start to become disruptive etc. they don't deal with it. They either call him into the room or send the kid to his room. My dad is only one person and can not monitor or calm a whole grade of children at once. Educating and providing techniques/tools so that he can focus on educating the direct students would be helpful. I also think that how a parent chooses to parent their child is important. Children learn what their parents teach. It is important for parents to teach inclusiveness, how to respond when they see someone that may not look or act "normal", and about diversity.

Pacific Islanders are trying to maintain their culture in Las Vegas which is called the "9th island". Hawaii has a very high cost of living which is a factor for them moving to the mainland. The mainland has more opportunities and resources for everyone which is why our country has the concept of the "American Dream". People come to the US/Mainland for better opportunities in life. With everyone migrating to the same place, it is easier for them to maintain a sense of community. Blog 14 due 4/17

The macro-level factors related to cumulative trauma are historical trauma, pervasive institutional discrimination, and a hostile national context. The microlevel traumatic experiences are interpersonal discrimination and microaggressions. This level also included struggles with identity and recognition. Some of the outcomes for MENA Americans are hopelessness, insecurity, and alienation. Not all MENA people are Muslims, and not all Muslims are MENA. Adjusting to the American society can be hard as well which can lead to culture shock, issues with language barriers, and social exclusions. People come to America in hopes to achieve the American Dream or even just a better life. They end up experiencing some traumatic events which lead them to anxiety, depression, and psychological distress. Trauma is not linear so the events can have various effects on each individual. Week 13 blog due 4/10

I think racism affects mental health because it tears you down mentally. You start thinking bad about yourself and rely on others' opinions of you. Racism to me is a form of bullying which is not okay. This can give you anxiety which can turn into affecting your physical health. Mental health is just as important as physical health. It is a proven fact that if your mental health is not okay it will start to deteriorate your physical health. If you are so nervous about being bullied you may not eat, sleep, etc. which has a great impact on physical health. My article for our final project is actually about how ethnic and racial discrimination affects adolescents. My study proved that it causes anxiety, lower academic performance, and more. I was also surprised to find out that most of the discrimination was in form of ethnic/racial teasing which came from their friends.
