Blog Post 6 due 2/20
Please reflect on the following questions from this week's materials:
I think that White privilege and educational inequality started way back in our history of segregation. This did not end until 1954 in Brown v. Board of Education (Educational Inequality Lecture 11, slide 3). I think that educational inequality is a matter of racial differences but also family income. Education receives their money based on property taxes. So the areas with wealthier homes automatically get more resources in today's society. Back then it was all about race, but I feel like that has changed. I think that White families automatically have more opportunities and resources. Most white people get the opportunity to go on to higher education, and most of the time the parents pay for it. Black families may just go straight into working to provide for their families. If they do go to college they have to get as many scholarships as possible and may have to pay it all themselves. I think the size of the family also could affect the opportunity to go onto higher education and to have it paid for. In bigger families, it may not be possible to pay for everyone's education in full. I went to a primarily white school and I never saw someone without all the school supplies they need. My parents are teachers and they see how some kids do not have the money to buy new school supplies each year. I also think that it is easier for White people to get a job right out of school. Affirmative action is a way to enhance racial diversity as a factor to being admitted into schools (Educational Inequality Lecture 11, Slide 8). It is a way to admit students without just going based on SAT scores and GPA. I personally don't think there is enough information in the lecture to have an opinion on affirmative action. I think that it's good that colleges are trying to become more diverse, but I still think that if schools have a minimum SAT or GPA requirement then they should continue following it. Most schools have a minimum requirement because they are academically focused schools. I think the requirements are to make sure to take in students who can handle the curriculum. I also see the other side to it where maybe you have lower scores, but you are good at studying and working hard.
